ETHICAL FINANCE

START SMALL

  • Research

  • Speak to your bank about their ethical options and where your investments go

  • Switch your current account through a mobile app

  • Start investing small amounts to get a better understanding  (e.g. Abundance helps you invest directly in green businesses and projects)

  • Assess how ethical your pension is by looking at ShareAction's annual rankings

  • There are various resources to compare ethical investment options (moneysavingexpert.com, good-with-money.com, ethex.org.uk). Use at least two sources and cross-reference to spot the options that appear in both.

  • Join a movement, such as:

  • Make a pledge and form an accountability group to get some peer support.

  • Signing a petition (Avaaz have thousands of campaigns you can get involved with)

  • Ask how ethical your current pension fund is - you could mobilise co-workers and speak to your management team to switch to a more ethical fund

  • Friends of the Earth are always looking for on-the-ground volunteers.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD

GO ORGANIC / SEASONAL

  • Whilst orgainc can be more expensive, start with cheaper/targeted choices - check out the "dirty dozen" list of fruit and veg with the highest level of pesticides you might want to switch over first

  • Not sure what's in season? Eat the Seasons provides useful information

  • Subscribing to local VegBoxes is a good way to combine organic and seasonal choices. Check out Sutton Community Farm or find your local VegBox at Better Food Traders

RE-USE / GET CREATIVE

  • Olio lets you share unwanted food with neighbours

  • Download and use apps such as Karma and Too Good To Go for cheaper meals

  • There are many ways you can keep your food fresh for longer: freeze half the loaf of the bread you buy and use it later

  • Bananas turning brown? Cut them into pieces and put them in the freezer too - it will add some extra coolness to your next smoothie

  • Treat fresh herbs like flowers - they like being in a jar of water and some place chilly - like your fridge

THINGS WE LIKED

  • Mimica Touch is a temperature-sensitive indicator cap or label for food freshness. It helps you store your food at the right temperature, and reduces food waste by showing you when your food actually spoils

  • Wasteless provides an all-in-one solution to reduce food waste and increase perishable food profit by dynamically pricing items with a shorter expiration date at their optimal price point

  • Winnow provides an AI solution to cafes and restaurants to help chefs measure, monitor and cut waste

  • Food Cycle supports people who are hungry and lonely by serving tasty lunches and dinners from surplus food

  • Still struggling to decide on the most sustainable way to buy and prepare your food? This article might help.

COMMUNITY ACTION

ARTICULATE YOUR VALUES

  • By starting to identify your core values (think about “peak” experiences in your life and why they excited you) you can align your behaviours to match these and live a more fulfilled life

  • Ask yourself two key questions:

    • What am I inspired to do?

    • What is the next step I need to take to make this happen?

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

  • Check out the work being done by the Future Democracy Hub and The Trust The People project - to find out more please take a look here and here

  • You can also learn more about the workshops that The Future Democracy Hub are running as part of the programme, as well as many other sessions, on Reset TV

HOMELESSNESS

COMPASSION

  • The most important thing we can do the next time we see someone on the street is to show compassion - a simple smile and hello makes a huge difference

  • We must keep talking about homelessness - recent times have shown that issues can be tackled head-on when there is public engagement and focus

ACTION IDEAS

  • Donate and/or sign-up to volunteer with Sleep Pods - an emergency aid kit designed for rough sleepers in severe weather conditions. Upcoming builds will take place in Kent, Birmingham, London and Bristol

  • Volunteer and get involved with campaigns by homelessness charities, such as:

RESOURCES

  • TED Talk - The Simple Way Everyone Can Help The Homeless

  • Podcast - Reasons to be Cheerful: Tackling Rough Sleeping: Why Does It Take A Pandemic?

  • Article - Big Issue
  • Try out this short simulation game which shows just how easy it can be to end up homeless. It’s a real eye-opener, do give it a go.
